Learning how to play any musical instrument can be a very enriching experience. It does not matter if you are ages 7 – 70; it is never too late to start. You may be retired from a 40 year career at your job. If you have always wanted to be a part of an experience at learning how to play any instrument: the piano, trumpet, violin, or guitar there really is nothing holding you back. You should never be in the position at any point in your life, in which you look back with regret that you did not pursue a hobby that had once piqued your interest.

Back in the mid-1950’s, due to such artists as Elvis Presley a new era of music called rock and roll was born. Teenagers listened to this type of music on radio stations all across the United States as it exploded in popularity. This led to a new wave of musicians who gained fame. The guitar became popular as artists such as Chuck Berry, (in addition to Elvis) were adept at expressing their style of music on the instrument.
By the mid 1960’s, with the dawn of the British Invasion led by such groups as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, the guitar was a featured instrument in many bands. Later in that decade, such artists as Eric Clapton, (Cream), Jimmy Page, (a featured member first in the group the Yardbirds, and later in Led Zeppelin) and the late, great solo artist Jimi Hendrix helped push the popularity of the guitar to new heights. With this popularity, more people wanted to be able to learn how to play the instrument.
There are other genres that feature the lead and bass guitar besides rock and pop music. Country music, for years has a strong following in the United States. Because of the popularity of jazz, which traces its roots back to the early 20th century, (particularly in the deep southern states in America) the guitar is an important instrument within that genre of music.
